Self-Initiated Expatriation: A ‘New’ Management Challenge—An Analysis Based on Bibliometrics

The globalization movement, the growing processes of internationalization and opening markets that have been observed over recent decades brought with them a significant increase in cross-border movements, expatriation assuming prominent role. However, if is reality international markets, years, this concept has taken on different typologies, including self-initiated expatriation. Characterized by individual initiative encourages individuals to move beyond their national borders search an work experience, it critical understand phenomena related SIE. More precisely, we aim study problematics SIE, namely, when started be studied who published area research, identification main types/sources publication used disseminate these works, as well topics that, within scope studied. To answer questions, using information from Scopus database, qualitative interpretive nature based bibliometric analysis was performed. At first, order better phenomenon global terms, 1050 publications were obtained item “expatriation”. In second step, questions posed, key research focused “self-initiated expatriation”, 82 identified. results allowed us conclude, among other observations, although for many particular case SIE began gain greater prominence 2010 onwards, highest peak number period between 2012 2014. top five authors are working field, sources where (mostly scientific articles) most frequently published, countries origin, approaches developed highlighted here. Theoretical practical contributions, political implications study, encourage development more exhaustive studies thus contributing promotion policies practices oriented towards management which can explore potential skills deeply contribute effective companies economies host them.
